Movement activity and localization of food were studied dynamically with the objective of establishing the capacities of behavioral adaptation of the young Dicentrarchus labrax faced with a novel situation. The role played by previous rearing conditions was demonstrated, the level of stimulation being a sensitive intervening factor (currents associated with the food). The data show the favourable effects of such treatment, and are in agreement with work carried out on higher vertebrates, which have brought to light the importance of early stimulation in behavioral ontogeny which respect to emotionality as well as capacities of adaptation in subjects reaching adulthood.

Polyculture trial of mullets (Mugil spp) tilapia sp.,hemichromis sp. and elops sp. OceanDocs

Polyculture trial of selected cultivable fin fishes was conducted at the Institute’s experimental fish farm Ikoyi, Lagos from April 1983 to January 1984. The species, Mugil spp; Tilapia spp; Hemichromis fasciatus and Elops lacerta gave a total annual production range of 1219 kg to 1441 kg per hectare (extrapolated). Tilapia species had the highest growth potential constituting 80% of the total harvest. Supplementary diet used was food left over (waste) from selected big hotels in Lagos. Elops lacerta (predator) recorded the highest average body weight of 415.88g while the lowest weight 62.14g, was recorded for Mugil spp. Tilapia spp and Hemichromis fasciatus had average body weights of 72.5g and 6.7 0g respectively.

Para producir larvas de peces con buenos rendimientos, se deben conocer los requerimientos nutricionales de la especie, particularmente en los primeros estadios larvarios. The appearance, ossification and growth of cartilaginous structures of the mouth in early larval stages of laboratory reared red porgy Pagrus pagrus, were examined. At the time of mouth opening, red porgy larvae are equipped with the fundamental components of the oral cavity to allow the sucking motion for acquiring food. During the initial feeding stage, from day 5 after hatching (AH) to day 7 AH, the hyoid and lower branchial archs were completed, and the head length and other structural elements, like the ceratohyal-epihyal cartilage, increased rapidly. Knowledge of the life history of fish larvae is of practical importance to understand variations in the survival rate not only for cultivated fish but also for fishery biology studies. With the aim of recognizing critical changes during the first days of life of red porgy larvae, the oxygen consumption, growth, and food utilization were studied. After hatching, the larvae were transferred to two 400 L fiberglass tanks with microalgae (Nannochloropsis oculata)and enriched rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis)as initial food. Spontaneous spawning of red porgy was achieved in captivity by using photoperiod and temperature control systems along the year. During a four-month reproduction period females released in average about 0.2 times their own body weight in oocytes with an energy content of 5.71 J mg-1 wet weight. A total of 28.8 x 106 eggs and approximately 200 g of viable eggs (wet weight) per female kg were obtained. The eggs and larvae quality in terms of hatching and larval survival rates experienced a significant variation during the spawning season ranging between 0%-92% and 0.3%-33.2% respectively. Comments in reference to the probable causes of these variations and the need of carrying on with this line of research are presented.

The utilization of the energy of food by red porgy (Pagrus pagrus Linnaeus, 1758) from the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) was studied. From the energetic point of view, it is proposed that the strategy of patitioning, utilization and storage of the energy of food, is an indicator of the organism response to the environmental conditions. Afin de réduire le coût des aliments aquacoles, nous avons procédé à la substitution d’une matière première végétale importée: le tourteau de soja (TS) par un sous produit local : la farine de tomate (FT). L’expérience est menée sur des juvéniles de Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) monosexe mâle ayant un poids moyen initial de 20,54 ± 0,08 g. In the three species Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus auratus , and Anguilla anguilla an artificial feeding (dry pellets) disturbs liver cells as revealed at ultrastructural level. In hepatocytes, anomalies consist of lipids storage (liposomes) considered as deviation in fatty acids metabolism. Moreover are observed cellular alterations (mitochondrial vacuolization, nuclear pycnosis) related to degenerative process. It is of great interest to understand wether liver modifications are just a reaction to an unbalanced feeding or a true trophic pathology.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different feed management on the quality of effluent water generated in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) culture ponds. Feed was supplied as follows: natural food, and pelleted, extruded or minced ration. The study was conducted during 19 weeks in 12 continuous water exchange ponds of 300 m² each, with a population of male Nile tilapia juveniles, in a density equal to 1.7 fish m-2. The present study was conducted to determine the parameters regulating spawning performance of P. orbignyanus wild broodstock. The adaptation to captivity was successfully achieved with minimal stress levels. In three consecutive spawning seasons, the annual photothermal manipulation was not effective for the maturation and natural spawning of females although males were running. Females were HCG injected, releasing non fertilized eggs. En aquaculture, l'alimentation représente plus de 50% du coût total de la production. L'apport d'aliment constitue ainsi un maillon essentiel de l'activité aquacole. Une bonne alimentation permet d'optimiser la croissance des poissons et de minimiser les rejets qui des sources de pollution du milieu d'élevage. En élevage intensif, l'aliment quasi-exclusivement apporté sous forme d'aliments composés dans lesquels doit être incorporé l'ensemble des nutriments indispensables à la bonne croissance des poissons. The aim of the present work was to answer the following question: can a small change in the tilapia’s on-going feeding strategy impair its growth? In the initial phase of the study, fish were evenly distributed and maintained for two weeks in four tanks. In tanks 1 and 2, the ration was given in three equal meals at 8, 12 and 16h or at 9, 13 and 17h, respectively. In tanks 3 and 4, there was only one daily meal at 9 or 10 o’clock, respectively. ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine the level of dietary crude protein (CP) (480, 400, 440, 520 and 560g kg-1) in rations for juvenile II fat snook (Centropomus parallelus) that best promotes protein absorption and lower excretion of nitrogenous products. Three experiments were conducted: the first assessed the protein retention rate; the second evaluated ammonia excretion; and the third determined the best digestibility coefficient. The estimated protein retention rate showed a positive quadratic response to dietary CP with maximum retention at the 510.20g kg-1 protein level, and increasing levels of protein resulted in a greater total ammonia excretion rate in water. Current experiment was undertaken during 6 weeks with Nile tilapia, Oreochomis niloticus, fingerlings (1.28 ± 0.03 g) to assess the effects of moderate Na2CO3 liming on water quality and fish growth performance. Twenty-four 25 L-aquaria, with 15 fish per aquarium, were used, of which twelve aquaria were placed in the lab’s indoor room and twelve in the outdoor area.
